Issele-Uku Illustrious Citizens
A
SELF REFLECTION
Dr. Josephine Ngozi Mokwunyei
of Idumu Ozoma, Ogbeidibo, Issele-Uku
is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre Arts and
Mass Communication, University of Benin, Benin-City, Nigeria. She holds a
B.A. (second class upper division) Honors Degree in Music; M.A. in Theatre
Arts and a Ph.D. in African Studies, from the University of Nigeria Nsukka;
University of Ibadan and University of Ghana, Legon, respectively. She is
our illustrious daughter.

VC10, as he was fondly called by friends on account of
his alacrity, Dr. Ukponu was a man of many parts; in
many ways he seemed the
very
embodiment of diametrically opposite qualities. He was
at once a conservative and revolutionary; serious minded
and humorous; conservationist and iconoclast; pragmatist
and idealist; peacemaker and fighter; temporal and
spiritual.

At the time when most parents forbade their
female children from getting a formal education;
Zulu’s parents broke with tradition and took a
leap in the dark. Fondly called Zulu by her family,
friends and in the professional circle, Prof. Nwazuluwa Onuekwuke
Sofola became Nigeria’s first published female playwright and
dramatist. She was born in Issele-Uku, Delta State of Nigeria in
1935 to the Okwumabua family of Ogbeutu quarters.
Martin, Olisemeke Samuel
Wadei, 1875 - 1976

Olisemeke was
born in Ogboli village, Issele-Uku in the present day Delta State in 1875.
According to tradition, a name given at birth can continue to determine the
destiny of the person. When he was born, his parents named him
Olisemeke, which mean "God has
done great," thereby showing that they were grateful to God for doing good
work in the family. By choosing such a name the parents were compelled to
remember God's favor towards the family in terms of protection, preservation
of life, favorable weather, abundant harvest, and good health. Indeed one
could say the name pushed young Olisemeke towards success because God favors
those who are always grateful to him.
