DELTA State Police
Commissioner, Mr. Jacob Oshiomogho said yesterday in Asaba that
investigation into the recent bullion van robbery on Asaba-Benin highway
showed that the bandits stole the sum of N91.5 million.
The bullion van was conveying
money from one of the new generation banks from Anambra enroute Benin-City
in Edo state when it was ambushed on the 13th of this month between
Ubulu-Okiti and Issele-Uku.
The CP said "the officials of
the bank have given us their statements and they said N91.5m was stolen in
the operation and we lost an ASP, who walked into the scene on his way to
the command's headquarters in Asaba, the state capital. Two of our men, who
were attached to Anambra Police Command sustained gunshot injuries. Three
rifles were also stolen by the hoodlums", he stated.
He blamed the management of the
bank for failing to make arrangement for adequate security arrangement to
protect the bullion van, noting that it was very unwise that only two
policemen were inside the bullion van while in transit.
The Assistant Superintendent of
Police (ASP) attached to Issele-Uku police station as a Station Officer
unfortunately ran into the operation while on his way to Asaba on a
motorcycle.
A top management of the bank
(names withheld) who was said be behind the movement of the bullion van was
immediately picked up.
